When travelling on the motorway, the last thing you want to do is break down. With vehicles travelling at high speeds in different lanes, the motorway can be a very dangerous place to stop. It is therefore vital that you understand the correct protocol of what to do in the event of a breakdown. Without knowing what to do when you break down on the motorway, you are not only putting yourself at risk but those travelling on the motorway too.

Here are our tips on what you should do if you break down on the motorway and how you can prevent this from happening.

Pull into a Safe Area

It might seem obvious, but leaving the motorway at the next exit and pulling into somewhere safe is the first thing you should consider doing. If you are unable to find any exits then you should pull onto the hard shoulder instead. The harsh shoulder is a strip of road which is not usually designed for driving on, but for emergencies only. You should turn your car tyres to the left and the hazard lights should then be turned on to increase visibility.

Get Out of your Car

Although it might seem logical to stay in your car, you want to get away from the incoming traffic just in case any collision occurs. Therefore it is advised that you should get out of your car on the left side and stand behind the barrier so that you are safe from the driving lanes. For maximum safety, It is recommended that you spend as little time on the hard shoulder.

Contact Breakdown

From here, you should use your phone to contact a breakdown team to come and assist you. Alternatively, there are emergency telephones that you can use in case you don’t have a mobile on you. Using

Avoid Future Breakdowns

To avoid the risk of this happening, you should frequently check both your car tyres and brakes to ensure that everything is in working order. In fact, damaged tyres are one of the most common types of breakdown. It is therefore important to ensure that your car tyre pressure is at the correct level to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Furthermore, ensuring that you have had up-to-date car servicing minimises the risk of a breakdown on the motorway.
