5 Signs Your Car Is Struggling With The Cold Weather

November 22, 2024

As the winter approaches, our homes aren't the only assets we need to be thinking about! When we start reaching the colder temperatures, even dipping into the negatives, keeping our cars working properly can be a challenge. Our vehicles can really struggle during the colder months, and our blog is here to help you spot the signs that your car may not be coping with the winter temperatures. If you want to learn more about the signs to look out for and when to seek advice from vehicle mechanics, keep on reading our article.

Signs To Look Out For This Winter

Using your vehicle during the winter can require more care and maintenance, from de-icing your windows to ensuring your tires are in good condition, it's important to ensure that your vehicle is well maintained during these months. We've outlined some of the top signs to look out for below this winter.

Tyre Pressure

It's natural for your tyre pressure to drop as the temperature decreases. Even if your tyres were fully pumped, they may drop quicker in the cold and this is something to be aware of. If you're noticing uneven steering or a strange feeling when driving, it may be the tyre pressure causing this. Be sure to regularly check your tyres in the winter.

Freezing Fluids

The fluids in your engine should not be freezing, and if they are, it could lead to serious repairs. You should check under your bonnet to see whether your fluids are freezing or not, and if they are frozen, do not drive your car. You should top up the fluids with a mix that doesn't freeze for safety reasons.

Windows & Doors

A lot of the time, your windows and doors may be frozen shut, which is pretty common during the winter. If you do find this happening often, you can wait for your car to warm up, but if you're pressed for time you can use a de-icer spray to help. Try to avoid yanking the handle, as this may break off which is not ideal.

Windscreen Wipers

Windscreen wipers can easily become frozen to your windshield, and washer fluid can become frozen. If you do experience this, use a de-icer, rather than yanking your windscreen wipers. For washer fluid, you may need to wait for it to warm up and become a liquid again.

Battery Issues

Cars that are really struggling with the cold may also have battery issues. If your car battery is flat, even though it shouldn’t be, this could be because of the cold temperatures. Definitely call out a vehicle mechanic or see a professional if you’re struggling with frequent battery issues.
