Top Signs That Your Brake Pads Need Replacing

Brake pad replacement

Squeaky brakes or strange noises are not signs of well-functioning brakes and in this case, you need to have them looked at. As one of the most essential parts of your car, brake pad maintenance will keep you safe as the driver and prevent underlying issues from occurring.

Here are some of the top signs that your brake pads need replacing.

Screeching sounds

One of the first things you may notice when your brake pads need to be replaced is screeching sounds. Near the end of their life, brake pads can begin to screech and squeak when they’re excessively worn down so never ignore ongoing sounds.

Grinding and vibrations

When applying pressure to the brakes you may notice vibrations under the pads as well as grinding. In most cases, this is caused by warped or uneven brake pad wear which means your brakes are not going to operate properly. Furthermore, continuous grinding can result in more damage and potentially higher repair costs.

More pressure is needed on the brakes

Are you having to apply more pressure than usual to get your brakes working? A change of this kind is a clear indicator that something is wrong with the performance of your brakes. Your brake pads may be completely worn down which is very unsafe, especially if you are unable to stop in time.

Your dashboard has a warning light

Warning lights don’t pop up for no reason. While it may be tempting to ignore them, underlying issues could be getting progressively worse and making your vehicle unsafe. If you notice a brake warning light, always get an opinion from an expert mechanic.

Your pedals are sinking

You shouldn’t have to apply too much pressure to your brakes. If you find yourself not only adding more pressure but notice that your brake pads are sinking into the floor then this is also a sign that your brake pads may need replacing.
