Tips When Driving In The Rain

Rain and wet roads are probably the worst things that most drivers will have to deal with most of the time. When it starts to rain or if the roads are still wet from a recent storm, there are more risks and dangers. When it starts to rain, many drivers will just slow down as their only safety measure. Slowing down is an important part of driving safely in the rain, but there are also a number of other techniques and things to think about.
Heavy downpours can be dangerous, so it's important to know how to stay safe when they happen.
Drive A Car That Is Clean And In Good Shape
When rainy weather makes it hard to see, it's important that your car doesn't get in the way. Clean the outside and inside of your windshield and windows once a month, and check the wiper blades to make sure they aren't too worn. Once a week, check the level of your windshield washer fluid.
Before you drive your car for the first time each day, you should quickly check the headlights, taillights, turn signals, and tyre treads. If your tyres are near or below the minimum thread required, it is important for you to get them replaced as soon as possible. Having worn tyres on your car in the rain can lead to aquaplaning.
Get To Know The Roads
In different parts of the country, roads are built to handle different kinds of weather, so if you are new to an area, be extra careful during or after a storm. Some roads can hold rain and make them extremely slippery. If you haven't driven down a road before, make sure you are extra careful on your route. Think about your route for a moment, too. If it goes under low bridges or through ditches that flood easily, it might be better to take the freeway instead. If you find that your car isn’t doing well on wet roads, it may be time to look at the condition of your tyres. Here at Acorn Tyres, we can help you to choose the right tyres for your car.
Turn On Lights But Not Your Full Beam
Even though many newer cars have lights that turn on when the windshield wipers are used, you should still turn on the headlights so that your rear lights also come on. The reason you have headlights is so that other people can see you. When your headlights and taillights are both on, you can see all four sides of the car. You don't need to turn on your full-beam, though. The brighter light will just bounce back into your eyes and annoy other drivers when it hits a wet surface.
Slow Down
You need to leave at least five seconds between your car and the car in front of you and don't feel like you have to drive the speed limit. If the road is wet, it could be too fast for the current conditions. Others can pass you by if they don't like you slowing down.
