Cars and other vehicles have come a long way since the Benz Patent-Motorwagen in 1886 and the level of engineering prowess present in cars nowadays is truly spectacular. Contemporary cars go faster, handle better, are safer and feature complex technology. Here are some of the best examples of modern car engineering.

The Bugatti Veyron

When the Bugatti Veyron 2005 was revealed, it completely shook the automotive world with its eye-watering speed and engineering mastery. The car manages to squeeze out over 1000 horsepower with a top speed of over 253 mph from its astonishing quadruple-turbocharged W16 engine; equal to two V8s glued together.

Bloodhound SSC

If you’re a speedfreak, you can’t get any faster than the Bloodhound SSC. This vehicle- looking more like a rocket - is the first car in history to reach 1,000 mph! The dual jet engines that the car boasts produce an equivalent to 135,000 brake horsepower which allows it to travel a mile in just 3.6 seconds.

McLaren F1

More in-vogue today than the Veyron is McLaren’s F1 which has become the new masterpiece of technological engineering. This ultimate supercar was designed by Gordan Murray - who designs F1 cars - and can reach speeds of up to 241 mph. It’s not the fastest car ever produced, but the weight-saving, aerodynamics and unadulterated beauty of the vehicle have given it a special place in the pantheon of supercars.

Toyota Prius

Finally, this car does not go fast; it’s world-renowned for another reason entirely. The second-gen Toyota Prius won Motor Trend’s 2004 ‘Car of the Year’ because it gave credence to the idea that cars could be built well and work fantastically without being bad for the environment.
