Your brakes are, arguably, the most important part of your car. From a safety point of view, healthy and functioning brakes are absolutely essential in protecting you and your passengers from potentially life-threatening accidents. With that in mind, it’s crucial that you know whether you’re brakes need repairing, replacing or some general maintenance. If you don’t notice the signs then you could be in for a large bill, or worse, later on down the line.

Disconcerting Noises When Braking

One of the easiest signs of wearing or worn brakes to notice is the emitting of unusual sounds when driving. One of the indicators of wearing brakes is a squealing noise as you drive which stops as you apply the brakes. This is caused by the brake pad wear indicators contacting the rotor.

Alternatively, if you hear a grinding sound as you brake, then this is another sure sign that you need to take your car to the garage immediately. This could indicate that the pads are worn completely through and the sound you’re hearing is sheer metal on metal.

Vibrations or Wobbling

If you notice that your steering wheel is shuddering as you drive or when you apply the brakes, this could also indicate some serious problems. This symptom can often be caused by an uneven rotor. It could even be a sign of a chip or crack! In this case, you should seek immediate repairs and refrain from driving your car at all if possible.

This could also be a sign that your brake caliper is faulty and not releasing the brakes correctly. Whatever the problem is, it’s very important to get your car checked out if you feel it vibrate or brake erratically.

Car Pulling To One Side

If your car seems to be wobbling or pulling to one side, this is another sign that your brake system may be at fault. This could simply be a tracking issue, but it could also indicate that your brakes have worn unevenly to one another. It could also be a sign that there is a leak of your brake fluid.
