Whether you’re driving across the country to spend Christmas with your family or travelling far to spend the weekend away, preparing your vehicle before a long road trip is essential. Making sure that your car is in top condition and ready for the trip is key to ensure that you get to your destination safely and comfortably. Below, we’ve put together our top tips on how to prepare for a long road trip.

Check your car beforehand

It’s a good idea to have your car checked at least a week before you set off on your journey. Tyres are one of the most important parts of your car to check and it’s essential that they are in top condition. It is a legal requirement that the tread depth is above 1.6mm and that they are pumped to the correct pressure. In addition, you should also have your brakes, lights and fluid levels checked.

Get breakdown cover

No matter how prepared your vehicle is, breakdowns and accidents can still happen. Before you set off, it’s important that you make sure you have breakdown cover in case your car runs into problems or breaks down on the road. If your car battery dies or one of your tyres punctures, breakdown cover can provide assistance so that you’re not stranded on the side of the road.

Get plenty of sleep beforehand

It’s important that you are wide awake and alert while driving, which means that getting a good night’s rest is essential. Make sure that you get at least 7 hours of sleep the night before and take regular breaks when you are driving. You should always aim to stop roughly every two hours, if not more often.

Pack water and snacks

Staying hydrated while driving is key. Make sure that you’ve got plenty of water for the journey to keep you hydrated and stock up on vitamin-packed snacks. Snacking regularly and drinking lots of water will keep you alert and hydrated during the long drive ahead.
