Brake pads

Driving with damaged or faulty brakes isn’t just dangerous for you and other drivers, it can also lower the quality of your car and fuel efficiency. Proper brake maintenance is essential if you want to maintain your vehicle and stay safe on the road, so you should never ignore warning signs that suggest you need brake repair.

Spotting warning signs early can also save you money on more serious repairs further down the line, so read on to find out more about four signs you need brake service or repairs.

Unusual noises

Squealing, squeaking or grinding sounds are all warning signs that your brakes need attention. High pitched squealing or squeaking noises can be a sign of worn down brake pads, especially if the noise stops when you apply the brakes. A grinding noise can occur for several reasons; you may have a small piece of gravel or rock trapped, worn brake pads, or lack of lubrication.

A burning smell

A sharp, chemical burning smell suggests that your brakes or clutch have overheated. If you notice a sudden burning smell, pull over as soon as possible to allow your brakes to cool. You risk brake failure if the fluid is heated to boiling point, so it’s always best to proceed carefully.

A ‘spongy’ brake pedal

A lack of resistance in your brake pedal can cause it to feel ‘spongy’ or soft when pressed. Brake pedals should stop around 1-3 inches above the floor (depending on whether you drive manual or automatic), so seek assistance immediately if the pedal sinks all the way to the ground when pressed.

Leaking fluid

A soft brake pedal is usually a warning sign that fluid is leaking somewhere, either from the master cylinder or another component of your brake system. Check on the ground around your vehicle for any liquid trails; these can range in colour from a light yellow to dark brown. Leaking brake fluid means there may not be enough power to clamp the brake pads to the rotors, so arrange repairs as soon as possible.
