Don’t Get Caught Out: Common MOT Fails

We’ve all been there, booked in for a last-minute MOT on a vehicle that is past its prime and, while you might get lucky and scrape by, the chances are that a vehicle that hasn’t been properly looked after won’t pass an MOT test.
As is required by UK law, any car that is more than three years old must be assessed yearly and pass an annual MOT. Aside from vehicles manufactured before 1960, this applies to all cars. This is not a new law and has been in place since 1967 in its current form. So, why do so many still fail? Whilst MOTs may seem somewhat confusing or complex, many vehicles fail due to simple faults. Here at Acorn Tyres, we’ve outlined a handful of common MOT fails.
Read on to discover more.
Suspension
First on our list are suspension-related issues. These types of faults can be well-hidden and are often misdiagnosed by less experienced mechanics. While there are a number of things that can wreak havoc with suspension, potholes are repeat offenders. Listen out for abnormal noises coming from your car while driving on bumpy roads or taking corners as this could be a sign that your suspension is experiencing difficulties.
Lighting & Signals
Next up, issues relating to lighting and turning signals are the most common reason for failed MOTs and are to blame for nearly 20% of unpassable vehicles. This could be due to something more serious, such as broken brake lights, or something incredibly simple, like a blown indicator bulb. Before taking your car in for an MOT, it is a good idea to test that all of your lights are working correctly. This can easily be done with a friend or by yourself and will require you to walk around the vehicle with all the lights turned on.
Brakes
Thirdly, faulty brakes are another common cause of MOT failures. It goes without saying that properly functioning brakes are absolutely essential to any vehicle, so it is slightly worrying that 10% of MOT fails are related to this part of the car. As with suspension-related issues, faulty brakes can be identified by listening out for odd sounds or high-pitched screeching while braking. If your car veers to the left or right as you bring it to a stop, this is a clear sign of worn or faulty brakes too.
