Your Car Must Pass An MOT Test Annually

Vehicles should receive their first M.O.T. when they reach 3 years of age. Every vehicle that is 3 years old or over must have a current MOT test certificate and you must renew this once a year. An average MOT test takes between 45 and 60 minutes, but there are a couple of other things to take into consideration, therefore if your vehicle fails the test and repairs are needed, tests will take noticeably longer. A test centre isn’t allowed to let you drive away a car that has failed an MOT until the problems are fixed, therefore anyone booking in an MOT test should do so with an open mind.

Keeping A Vehicle Maintained

According to data, almost half of all faults found during an MOT could have been avoided by the owner prioritising regular maintenance. Keen drivers and those who regularly commute long distances should immediately get their car checked out to avoid complex problems, which may even lead to issues such as lower fuel efficiency, environmentally damaging emissions and more. If your car fails an MOT, you will be issued a ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’ from the test centre which details the reason(s) for not passing. Before getting your vehicle retested, you will need to resolve these issues. In many cases, the test centre will also be able to carry out the repairs.

Respect VOSA staff

Operating around the country to ensure that the condition of vehicles currently active on the roads, VOSA (Vehicle and operator services agency) staff have the power to stop vehicles without any specific fault being apparent, and you are legally obliged to pull over should you be instructed to do so by a VOSA representative. For a police car to stop you they need to have a reasonable suspicion that you are doing something wrong, whereas VOSA can stop cars at random to check the condition of the vehicle. An excellent measure for taking dysfunctional vehicles off the road, these individuals should be trusted, and the best way to prevent an unplanned encounter with such individuals is by ensuring your MOT is updated.
