3 Ways to Prepare Your Car for Autumn

As the days start to cool down and the leaves start to change colour, driving conditions for motorists tend to become a bit more challenging as we head into autumn. From heavy rainfall leading roads to flooding to piled up mulch causing cars to slip and slide on the road, this season comes with its own unique hazards for drivers. This is why it pays to be prepared: with some simple checks and basic equipment, you can ensure that your car is fit for the road this upcoming autumn.
1. Car Exterior
The first check to perform is ensuring all car bulbs are working. Have a friend or family member walk around the car while you try the headlamps, brake lamps, indicators, side and tail lights, fog lamps and the reversing light.
Before the worst of the bad weather kicks in, you should have any fresh chips in the windscreen repaired. This prevents it from filling with debris or expanding into a crack.
You should also examine the condition of your windscreen wipers and replace them if necessary. The rubber that sits against the screen shouldn’t be frayed or split, and the wipers should clear the screen without smearing it.
2. Car Interior
If summer went by in the blink of an eye and you can’t remember you cleaned the inside of your car out, the season changing is the perfect time to do it. On top of this, damp autumn weather and a lower sun can prove to be a powerful foe against your windscreen. Grab a bottle of window cleaner and a microfibre cloth and clean the inside of the windscreen to help prevent them from fogging.
3. Tyres
Your tires play a vital role in staying safe on the road. To ensure they perform as well as possible, the tread depth should be routinely inspected. If the tread drops below 3mm, you should consider contacting your local tyre fitters to have it replaced. With tyres at the road legal 1.6mm limit, independent studies have shown that some cars take another 44 metres to stop at motorway speeds in wet weather, compared with tyres at 3mm.
Not only are roads more likely to be wet in autumn, but they’ll also be covered in fallen leaves which turn into mulch and can be extremely slippery. Again, this is a good reason to examine tyre tread depths and ensure that their air pressure is correct.
